Enclosed Controls: Industrial Motor Management & Protection
ADP provides a full spectrum of enclosed control solutions, from simple across-the-line starters to complex, multi-functional control cabinets. Our units are designed to protect your motors from overloads while providing intuitive operator interfaces.
Product Overview & Types
We offer two primary configurations to meet your facility's safety and footprint requirements:
Non-Combination Starters: A standalone motor starter (contactor + overload relay) in a NEMA enclosure. Ideal when a separate disconnect already exists upstream.
Combination Starters (The ADP Standard): These units integrate a local disconnect (either a circuit breaker or a fused switch) and the motor starter into a single enclosure.
Benefit: Increases safety by ensuring power is killed before the door can be opened and saves significant wall space.
Multi-Starter Enclosures: Custom cabinets housing multiple starters for a specific process or machine, integrated with a single main disconnect.
Technical Specifications
To ensure we meet your torque and load requirements, ADP builds to the following standards:
Ratings: NEMA Sizes 00 through Size 7+.
Horsepower (HP): Fractional HP up to 500HP+ at 480V.
Voltages: 208V, 240V, 480V, and 600V AC.
Starter Types: * FVNR (Full Voltage Non-Reversing): Standard start/stop.
FVR (Full Voltage Reversing): For applications requiring forward/reverse motion.
Multi-Speed: For motors with dedicated speed windings.
Key Features & Customization
What sets an ADP Enclosed Control apart is the engineering on the door and the internal logic:
Custom Operator Interface: Every unit can be equipped with heavy-duty 30mm or 22mm pilot devices:
HOA Switch (Hand-Off-Auto): Allows for manual testing or automated PLC control.
Pilot Lights: "Run" (Green), "Stop" (Red), and "Fault" (Amber) indicators.
Emergency Stop (E-Stop): Large mushroom-head buttons for immediate shutdown.
Control Power Transformers (CPT): Steps down the high voltage (e.g., 480V) to a safe control voltage (e.g., 120V or 24V) for the pilot devices.
Overload Protection: Precision electronic or thermal overload relays to prevent motor burnout.
Environmental & Safety Classifications
We build for the environment where the control lives. Our engineering team ensures compliance with UL 508A (Industrial Control Panels).
NEMA 1: General purpose indoor use.
NEMA 3R: Outdoor rain-proof protection.
NEMA 4X (Stainless Steel/Poly): For wastewater treatment or food processing (wash-down areas).
NEMA 7/9 (Explosion-Proof): Cast aluminum enclosures for Class I, Div 1 & 2 hazardous locations (Oil & Gas).
Common Applications
Industrial Pumping: Automated lead/lag pump control in wastewater or irrigation.
Ventilation & HVAC: Large-scale exhaust fans and cooling towers.
Material Handling: Conveyor belts, palletizers, and sorting systems.
Oil & Gas: Chemical injection pumps and ruggedized field starters.
NEMA Starter Sizing Guide
This table follows the NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) standards for three-phase, across-the-line magnetic starters. Selecting the correct NEMA size ensures the internal contactor can handle the motor’s in-rush current and continuous load without premature failure.
| NEMA Size | HP @ 208V | HP @ 230V | HP @ 460V / 600V | Continuous Amp Rating |
| 00 | 1.5 | 1.5 | 2 | 9A |
| 0 | 3 | 3 | 5 | 18A |
| 1 | 7.5 | 7.5 | 10 | 27A |
| 2 | 10 | 15 | 25 | 45A |
| 3 | 25 | 30 | 50 | 90A |
| 4 | 40 | 50 | 100 | 135A |
| 5 | 75 | 100 | 200 | 270A |
| 6 | 150 | 200 | 400 | 540A |
| 7 | — | 300 | 600 | 810A |
Why NEMA Sizes Matter
Unlike IEC-rated starters, which are built for specific "duty cycles," NEMA-rated starters are designed for heavy-duty industrial applications with higher safety factors and replaceable contacts.
Durability: NEMA starters are built to be robust and easily maintainable.
Interchangeability: A Size 1 starter from one manufacturer generally fits the same horsepower requirement as another, making ADP’s custom enclosures easy to integrate.
Safety: Every ADP Enclosed Control is built to UL 508A standards, ensuring that the short-circuit current rating (SCCR) matches your facility's fault current.
Technical Pro-Tip
Always check your motor’s Nameplate FLA (Full Load Amps). If the FLA is close to the continuous amp rating of a NEMA size, we recommend "upsizing" to the next NEMA size to ensure a longer equipment lifecycle, especially for high-cycle applications like compressors or conveyors.
Custom Options Available
We don't just provide the starter. Our ETO (Engineered-To-Order) team can add the following to any enclosed control:
Electronic Overload Relays: For precise motor protection against phase loss.
Integrated Disconnects: Fused or Non-Fused for "Combination Starter" safety.
Bypass Logic: For VFD systems that need a backup "Across-the-Line" start mode.
Custom Pilot Devices: 30mm heavy-duty buttons, HOA switches, and elapsed time meters.
